John Reeves - Tamaqua, PA USA   (Saturday, August 2, 2008)

I started about 10 years ago. I knew someone who had a rig and let me practice. First I did a grapefruit, then a raw chicken, then people. It worked out well. I then invested in the deluxe kit from Spaulding & Rogers and the rest is history. It took a while to develope confidence and skill, but it didn't come with an initial outlay of $5600 either. My advice is sketch, read study and save. The Autoclave is your largest initial outlay so be prepared to spent upwards of $2k for a new 'clave.....Good Luck !

  Alternative way to learn tattooing
Lenny Welch - Tampa, FL   (Saturday, June 7, 2008)

I agree that you cannot become a successful tattoo artist after only 2 weeks of training. I am now developing and offering 3 month workshops for beginning tattooing. I have a 12 week curriculum developed and will be offering these workshops at my studio: Addicted 2 Tattoos, in Tampa, FL starting June 9. The workshop meets once a week for 4 hours for a total of 3 months for beginners. The cost is $1200. That works out to $25 per hour. This will be intensive, small size groups (limit of 4 per session) and will consist of 1 hr. lecture and discussion, 1 hour of drawing and 2 hours of tattooing per session.

I am a qualified college instructor with 10 years experience in the classroom, a BA in Fine Art and 16 years tattooing.

I will be requiring each student to purchase about $175 of art supplies to attend the workshop and I will supply all tattoo equipment + supplies for the training.

In Sept. of 2008 and Intermediate training workshop will be introduced, and in Dec. an Advanced training workshop will be introduced.

This type of training allows the student to continue to hold a job, have a family and a life, and get the basics under their belts to learn to tattoo.

If you are interested, email: info@addicted2tattoos.com with a subject of 'tattoo training'.

Nick T - garner, IA   (Thursday, March 27, 2008)

ok all that is said in this kinda makes sence, but what are you supposed to do when there isn't a shop around you to do an aprentiship at, or even if there is what if they don't take any one in for an aprentiship, what do you do then, because its hard to follow your dream when theres no place but maybe a school to help you out, yeah it might cost a little more and its a crash cource, but what else are you supposed to do?

  TATTOO SCHOOL
BIGT MIKE - DETROIT   (Saturday, February 23, 2008)

OK HERE IS MY THOUGHT ON THIS SO CALLED TATTOO SCHOOL. I AM JUST LEARNING HOW TO TATTOO THE OLD FASHONED WAY I BOTUGH A MACHINE POWER SUPPLY NEEDLES OF ALL SIZES FOR EVERYTHING COLOR AND ALL THE TUBES I NEED FOR NOW.I THINGK THAT ANY SCHOOL THAT IS SAYING THEY CAN SHOW SOMEONE HOW TO TATTOO IS JUST A BUNCH OF CRAP. I HAVE DONE 30 TATTOOS SO FAR AND STILL DON'T CALL MYSELF A TATTOO ARTIST BY NO MEANS. I DO GET BETTER WITH EVERY TATTOO I DO BUT TO GO TO A SCHOOL AND LEARN FROM SOME GET RICH FAST GUY WELL IS BULLSHIT. I FEEL YOU LEARN BY DOING IT SO MY ADVISE IS TO GET SOME FRIENDS THAT WILL PLAY PIN CUSHIN AND DO SMALLER TATTS THAT CAN BE FIXED EAISLY ONCE YOU GET BETTER I PERSONALLY DO MOSTLY TRIBAL RIGHT NOW AND IT IS WORKING OUT GREAT
